In addition to its natural riches, the Riviera del Conero offers an enviable cultural heritage. The State Antiquarium of Numana provides precious testimony to this, thanks to artifacts from the ancient Picene necropolises discovered during excavations conducted between the 1960s and 1970s. The more than five hundred burials brought to light confirm that the area was the most important center of the Picenum region during the protohistoric age. Of particular importance is the “Queen's Tomb” – dating back to the end of the 6th century BC – from which comes a rich funerary collection featuring Attic pottery, bronze artifacts, and ivory and amber jewelry.
At the National Archaeological Museum of the Marche in Ancona, another exceptional artifact is preserved: the “Head of the Warrior of Numana.” It belonged to a monumental funerary statue that marked the tomb of an important figure, recognized as a warrior chief by the conical helmet, a sign of distinction and social identification. The head, made of local limestone, dates back to between the middle and the end of the 7th century BC and was found by chance in 1892 near Numana, at Ripe di S. Anna. It is one of the most famous artifacts of the Picene civilization.
